About Ian (‘Butch’)

Ian Butcher is a PGA Professional and V1 Golf coach based at Kings Acre in Edinburgh, Scotland.

Ian – or ‘Butch’ – teaches from a deep understanding of the ‘big picture’ of golf – body mechanics, the physics of the golf swing, and the mental models that help each individual golfer understand how they work properly together.

Ian’s approach doesn’t offer “quick fixes,” but instead promises to change your golf swing from one that doesn’t always work, into one that can.

In his own words…

Ian Butcher uses the V1 Pro system for video analysis and online coaching.

“From 2005 I set out to become the best golf coach I could be. I was a keen amateur golfer who played to a decent club level. I worked on the European Tour as a caddy, gaining valuable experience of the game at the highest level.

“I then did my PGA training at Kings Links Golf Centre in Aberdeen alongside some very successful Professionals. I met some remarkable mentors and spent a lot of time studying the golf swing in particular, and the game as a whole.

“Combining this with teaching players at all levels gave me the amount of knowledge and experience which I have today.

“Obviously no single coach is right for everyone, but I believe I am right for some.”

About Ian Butcher’s Golf Coaching

Quite a number of years ago I had visited a few golf Pro’s to get some lessons. Unfortunately in my experience they failed to help my game. Then I met Ian. Considering I myself am an executive business coach and one who has studied extensively, I immediately recognised that Ian understood coaching at a high level. I also realised that he had a remarkably deep technical knowledge about the golf swing and a comprehensive grasp of the game’s history. I feel blessed to have improved my golf and to have confidence and enjoyment in playing.
— C.J, Management Coach
Just wanted to let you know that the last 2 lessons have sorted me out! I feel like I know what I’m doing and why for the first time ever! Hitting it miles and playing amazing feel shots.
— Dr. Geoff Smith
As the producer of Golf programmes, and having been around the game and great players throughout my life, I know the real thing when I see it. Ian, or ‘Butch’, is the real deal. He is a top class golf teacher and has the knowledge to help anyone. Even my game improved!
— J.W. Jnr (Television Producer)
Having decided to have a go to improve my golf I took a number of lessons from Ian a few years ago and my handicap came down from 16 to 11. Since that time I had a regular check up to maintain my level. Then this last December I decided to commit to seeing how much further I could change and improve. Bearing in mind I am now retired and had the time to practice and work as instructed. Wow, I came down to a 6 handicap this year and also shot my first round under par. To be honest I had never thought this was possible for me, like many people who enjoy the game we get pretty much stuck at a certain level even if we get lessons and know what we do wrong. Actually changing is fun. Ian has an unique ability to understand the golf swing, the game and most importantly the individual.
— A.C, Fund Manager
Ian has the key attributes and qualities of a good coach and he demonstrates them in his working context. Furthermore he is considered, personable, flexible and adaptable in his work with golfers of differing abilities.
— N.M, Sports Director
Frustrated at being a 6 handicap club golfer, when I thought I was capable of better, I decided to get lessons from ‘Butch’. A number of years later I became a scratch golfer, won the club championship and have played some representative amateur golf. One of the most pleasing things is when others comment on my ball striking. All thanks to ‘Butch’.
— G.T, Investment
I have long felt that individual engagement and developing an understanding of the person who is trying to play The Game is your forté. That it is allied to your acute and perceptive observational skills, is the bonus which makes your approach special and of course it reflects the unique make up of whoever you might be ‘teaching.’
— Dr. Doug
I just wanted to reiterate that you are the best coach! I played an R&A match today on the Old and had 16 pars a bogey and a birdie, all thanks to the grip tip.
— Bobby M
I am only where I am with your help (and some hard work). Feeling more confident and believe I can play more consistently and aim for a lower handicap. Now had a birdie on last three rounds with a couple of other chances.
— Rob C
90% fairways hit, 1 holed bunker shot and a 10 foot putt to win down 18. Amazing. I can’t hit it left anymore! Literally impossible.
